A second edition of the textbook, Essentials of Glycobiology, is in preparation.  For this purpose the editors have modified the symbol nomenclature for representing glycans that was presented in the first edition.  Before finalizing this new system the editors have worked with other relevant organizations, such as the Consortium for Functional Glycomics and NLM/NCBI, to ensure compatibility and agreement.  Although the second edition will not be out for awhile, this information is being made available now, in case others in the field wish to adopt this system.  Details can be found in the downloadable file available here.
